Chicago Fire Rookie Goalkeeper Sean Johnson Earns NAPA MLS Save of the Week Award

CHICAGO, IL (August 26, 2010)– Chicago Fire rookie goalkeeper Sean Johnson picked up his third NAPA MLS Save of the Week Award this month after making a crucial stop in the Chicago Fire’s loss 4-3 against Houston Dynamo. Johnson dove to parry Dynamo midfielder Brian Mullan’s blast from the top of the box, keeping the game level at 0-0 in the 15th minute.
 
Johnson earned 70 percent of the vote, topping current San Jose Earthquakes and former Chicago Fire goalkeeper Jon Busch save of a Landon Donovan shot in the SJ Earthquakes – LA Galaxy matchup.
 
The 21-year-old rookie, has garnered four NAPA MLS Save of the Week nominations in the month of August, previously taking home the Award in his MLS debut in the Fire’s 3-2 victory over the LA Galaxy Aug. 1. The University of Central Florida product followed up his initial award winning performance with a seven save outing against New York Red Bulls strike duo Thierry Henry and Juan Pablo Angel. His last second save of an Angel shot earned Johnson his second consecutive win in his second MLS start as the Fire’s goalkeeper.
The Fire challenge Seattle Sounders FC at Qwest Field in Seattle this Saturday, Aug. 28 at 9:30 PM CT (Comcast SportsNet), and will return to TOYOTA PARK to face the league-leading LA Galaxy on Saturday, Sept. 4 at 3:00 PM CT (Comcast SportsNet/TeleFutura). Chicago Fire Designated Player Freddie Ljungberg To Appear on Chicago Tribune Live Today

 

CHICAGO, IL (August 19, 2010) – Chicago Fire Designated Player Freddie Ljungberg will visit host David Kaplan on Comcast SportsNet’s Chicago Tribune Live today, Thursday, Aug. 19 at 6:00 PM CT. The former Arsenal great and Swedish international will discuss the Fire’s playoff push, his move to the club and the city of Chicago.
 
Since Ljungberg’s signing July 30, the 33-year-old midfielder has appeared in three games for the Fire. The play-making midfielder tallied his first assist in a Fire uniform in the Fire’s 2-1 victory over the New England Revolution last night at TOYOTA PARK. The Men in Red are 2-0-1 since Ljungberg’s debut against Los Angeles Galaxy, Aug. 1.

Chicago Fire Rally to Defeat New England Revolution 2-1

CHICAGO, IL (Aug. 18, 2010) – Chicago Fire forward Calen Carr, in his season debut, came on as a substitute to tally the game winning goal in the 85th minute to lift the Chicago Fire over the New England Revolution 2-1 at TOYOTA PARK. The fifth-year Fire veteran, who entered the match in the 69th minute, returned to the field from a quadriceps injury to score his seventh career goal and first of 2010. Marko Perovic put New England on the board first and Baggio Husidic countered to tie the game in the 32nd minute as the Fire won their third home match of the season at TOYOTA PARK.
 
The Fire (6-5-6, 24 points), have appeared in the fewest amount of MLS games (17) to this point of the season, move in to sole possession of fourth place in the Eastern Conference. The Chicago club has games-in-hand on Toronto FC (19 games, 26 points), Red Bull New York (20 games, 31 points) and the Columbus Crew (20 games, 37 points).
