When the Chicago Bears signed tight end Brandon Manumaleuna on Friday, the first thing to go through my head was "I am so glad I'm not doing play-by-play for the Bears." In fact, I found it quite funny that Bears GM Jerry Angelo only referred to him as Brandon throughout the Friday evening press conference.
The second thing I thought of was "I wonder how many Scrabble points that dude's last name is worth?"
So I did some homework, and was actually fairly impressed. MANUMALEUNA is worth 15 Scrabble points, which is impressive. It is not, however, the highest total on the Bears, or in Chicago.
8 - two point conversion?
13 - if only you got more than one point for the letter A!
13 - long-snapper Patrick Mannelly is as good as it gets on special teams, but doesn't put up a big Scrabble score.
13 - more than the number of snaps he saw in 2009. Hopefully we'll see more of him in 2010.
15 - he's a big human being, and his scrabble score shows it.
15 - decent, but not running away with the team lead.
16 - if he catches one pass for every time an announcer butchers his last name this year, Jay Cutler will be a happy man.
19 - the top score on the team is a tie between linebacker Hunter Hillenmeyer and..
19 - center Olin Kreutz, thanks to that handy Z
16 - frankly, the Bulls do a better job scoring on the court than in scrabble. Rose? Noah? Where's the originality people?
23 - Blackhawks defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson scores well on behalf of the hottest team in town.
28 - White Sox catcher AJ Pierzynski comes up one point short of the top spot.
29 - Cubs reliever Jeff Samardzija is the top Scrabble last name in
Chicago.
