Another week of Bearless football starts tomorrow.
Cowboys….BLAH, BLAH, BLAH….Chargers BLAH, BLAH, BLAH….COLTS….BLAH, BLAH, BLAH…I think you get my point.
Who cares no team out there sports a GSH on their sleeves?
Though many of you will watch these games regardless consider the top free agents playing this week.
Like kids in a candy store this weekend will show off some exceptional talent that would look awfully sweet in a Chicago jersey next season.
Since the Bears start drafting in round 3 and will probably end up trading down to get an extra 4th and 5th round pick (just kidding I have no reason to believe that will happen this year, AGAIN) the Bears will need to retool based mostly on the FA class. Here are four soon-to-be-free-agents playing this week that the Bears need to consider acquiring going into next year.
WR – Vincent Jackson: He’s San Diego’s number one deep threat. He’s 6’5” with speed and a sticky pair of hands. I’ve seen Philip Rivers under throw him more times than I can count this season. If he played across from Cutler’s cannon we could be looking at a down field connection for the ages. This weekend he draws arguably the toughest cover corner in the league in Darrelle Revis. Revis shut down Andre Johnson, Terrell Owens, Marques Colston, Mike Sims-Walker, Steve Smith, Reggie Wayne, Chad Ochocinco, and Randy Moss……twice. I’ll be looking to see what kind of game VJack can put together against the best of the best.
WR – Miles Austin: He has quickly become the go-to guy in Dallas. Romo loves him. He’s not a $h1#-talker. He's great for the locker room. His explosion after the catch and willingness to drag across the middle makes him a great versatile receiver. I truly don’t think Jerry Jones will let him too far out of his site but for scouting players for next sesason, Austin would look great in navy and orange next year.
O-Line – Jahri Evans: Evans is the Saints best run blocker. With Drew Brees its hard to think of the Saints as a running team but with a 131.6 yards per game average the Saints finished 6th this season while for a large part of the first half of the season they were ranked number 1. It will be interesting to see how the Saints attack an Arizona defense that was torched last week by Green Bay. I think Evans looks to have a huge game and could provide a huge boost to the Bears inept line from last year.
Safety – Antoine Bathea: Sporting the skill set to play both the free and strong safety positions Bathea is largely unrecognized for his contributions to the Colts. He regularly fills in for the oft-injured Bob Sanders and does so fairly seamlessly. He is constantly one of the Colts leading tacklers largely due to his quick closing speed and intuition on the field. Bathea would be one other excellent fit to the Bears secondary, which I believe is the Bears weakest department on the field.
Its tough to say what this team wants to do going into next year. Obviously they want to win, but I don’t know if they have the willingness to win at all costs. We are going into an offseason that could very well be uncapped. This is the Bears chance to stop the bleeding grab a couple solid veteran players and not waste Jay Culter and all his glory.
There are a few amendments to the rules during an uncapped offseason. As I gather them and apply them to the Bears situation, I'll report back. Until then, lets scout the talent, make our wish list, and enjoy watching the Vikings get stomped by Dallas.
