Julius Peppers, Chester Taylor Sign with Bears. Big Day?

On Friday, March 5, 2010, the Chicago Bears signed All Pro defensive end Julius Peppers and running back Chester Taylor as free agents. These two signings represent not only the largest amount of money ever spent on free agents by the Bears in one day, but arguably one of the biggest offseason days in the franchise's history.

March 5 is a big day, but the best? Let's look back at some other candidates for the best non-game days in the history of our Chicago Bears.

Bears After Peppers? Buyer Beware

Lots of rumors are flying right now that the Chicago Bears are interested in spending a lot of money on All Pro defensive end Julius Peppers to improve their defense. I have some concerns, though, and want both fans and the Bears to live by the "Buyer Beware" idea when considering Peppers.

In eight seasons with the Carolina Panthers, Peppers has been one of the best defensive ends in the NFL. He has had double-digit sacks in six of those eight seasons, and is a big, fast, athletic end. He played power forward for North Carolina (read: no slouch) while also playing football there, and has translated that athletic ability into a fantastic NFL career.

However, Peppers is already 30 years old. 30. That's a big number when talking about defensive linemen, and history shows that this is really the peak age for production for most positions in the NFL. Shoot, the San Diego Chargers just parted ways with LaDainian Tomlinson because he's in the same age demographic as Peppers.

From the Bears perspective, let's consider the Chicago career of Adewale Ogunleye. He was acquired from the Miami Dolphins when he was 27, and reached 10 sacks only once.

On Saturday, the Pro Football Hall of Fame will announce the names of the players entering it's great museum this year. Jerry Rice and Emmitt Smith are obvious choices to get in, but this should finally be the year that former Bear Richard Dent gets the call.

Martz, "YES! I'm the Bears Offensive Coordinator!"

WHEW!!!! Its like eating that sandwich on Thanksgiving night.  Sometimes its just as good as the real meal.  The Bears hunted for the next great offensive mind.  They searched the realtively unknown ranks of tight end coaches, quarterback coaches, and line coaches and settled....SETTLED on a Superbowl winning coach for their offense.  One of the true geniuses of how to score points in the NFL.   He's had excellent passing offenses and, lets be honest, other than Kurt Warner, what great QB has he really coached?  Marc Bulger?  Meh.  I'm excited for this hire.  Clearly Martz is a friend of Lovie's and I'm sure he's been privy to some inside information regarding the coaching staff and the bleek future they've paved for themselves. Many think that this is a plug on a leaky, crumbling damn.  I'll go the other way.
