Kelly embraces football independence

Information from The Associated Press and ESPN.com Big Ten blogger Adam Rittenberg was used in this report.

In an offseason where the possibility of Big Ten expansion has been the talk of the sport, Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly took a few seconds Wednesday to stress how much he embraces the Fighting Irish's college football independence.

"From my standpoint, being the head football coach at Notre Dame, there's nothing better than being an independent football school," the coach, quoted in the South Bend Tribune, told the crowd at a scholar-athlete dinner.

"I know you're hearing all these rumors about the Big Ten and all these other things, but let me tell you one thing, the history ... the tradition of Notre Dame football is steeped in that independence."

WHB-AM in Kansas City reported Monday that the Big Ten extended invitations to Missouri, Nebraska, Notre Dame and Rutgers to help grow the conference.

The following day, it was confirmed that Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany reached out to the four schools to quash the report that the conference had offered expansion spots to them.

The conference is looking at expanding from its current 11 members so that it can extend the reach of its lucrative cable network and add a league championship game in football.

Big Ten athletic directors and coaches will meet for three days beginning Monday in downtown Chicago. They will be joined by faculty representatives, senior women's administrators and the head coaches in football and men's and women's basketball.

Smith, meanwhile, described next week's meetings as routine and that nothing would be decided in terms of expansion.

"This is our normal meetings, the ones we have every year," Smith said. "Jim will probably give us an update on what the consultant has shared, and I don't even know if the consultant report is done. He'll give us an update and then move on doing what he's been doing."

When Big 12 officials meet in June, they're likely to hear how unhappy conference commissioner Don Beebe is that two of his members are potentially being targeted by the Big Ten.

"We need to have a very frank conversation about where we're going and who's going to be on the plane when we take off," Beebe told WHB. "I will be very direct ... and want to find out."

Then Beebe added, "I've talked directly with Jim. I understand what he's doing, where he's coming from. Maybe I'd do it differently if I were in his situation, maybe I wouldn't. But I'm going to protect our interests."

2010 Blue-Gold Game Highlights

By: Evan J. Thomas

Saturday’s overcast Blue-Gold game marked the debut of head coach Brian Kelly. It was a nice sight to see the Notre Dame Head coach actually run out of the tunnel and lead his team on the field. The game featured the return of Dayne Christ from injury. Christ tore his anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee almost 6 months ago at the Alamo Dome and he and the Irish came out throwing. Christ completed 20 of his 31 pass attempts for 172 yards including a touchdown and two interceptions.  Christ acknowledged after the game that he tried forcing some of his passes. He noted that learning Kelly’s spread offense was a bit overwhelming at first but became acclimated quickly with running the spread.  The spread offense should open up many new areas for the Irish offense that hasn’t been seen in years past. Christ is expected to be the starter for the 2010 version of the Irish but has some stiff competition. His backup currently will be Nate Montana, the son of former Notre Dame and San Francisco 49er great Joe Montana.  Nate passed for 223 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Gold to a 27-19 victory over the Blue squad.

Besides the quarterbacks having pretty good days, the talk after the game was how much promise the running backs showed. Cierre Wood, who didn’t see the field with Weis at the helm as a freshman, ran for 110 yards and two touchdowns, including a 44-yard scamper. Junior running back Jonas Gray added a 38-yard touchdown run. Both runs were longer than any the Irish had all of last season. Kelly later stated “I would say that the running back position is the one that I feel really good after this game about the depth and the ability of that position.” Senior tight end Mike Ragone had a handful of nice catches for the offense. Freshman Tai-ler Jones showed some soft hands, as did Junior Michael “Money” Floyd and Shaquille Evans. Kelly said that the game was set up to make the offense look good, with the defense keeping things simple.

Jimmy Clausen Slips Out Of The First Round

By: Evan J. Thomas

I am eating my words after my “bold” prediction yesterday that former Notre Dame signal caller Jimmy Clausen would be drafted in the first round. Thursday night’s Prime Time NFL Draft on ESPN lasted almost 4 hours without Clausen’s name being called.   Two quarterbacks were drafted in the first round as expected, Sam Bradford to the QB less St. Louis Rams and a shocker took place when the Denver Broncos chose former Florida standout Tim Tebow. Tebow will now be in a 3-way quarterback battle with current Bronco starter Kyle Orton and the newly acquired and former Notre Dame stud Brady Quinn for the starting job. Clausen was joined at his home with the stunning Erin Andrews of ESPN. And lucky for him for staying at home rather than enduring the wrath of the ESPN cameras documenting every uncomfortable moment as each team passed on his services. His fall to the second round will give Clausen a better opportunity to play for a better team rather than the Raiders or Bills. As of this writing, Clausen’s potential suitors could be the Minnesota Vikings who own the 34th overall pick or the Kansas City Chiefs who covet the 36th overall pick and would reunite Clausen with his former Notre Dame coach and new Chiefs offensive coordinator Charlie Weis.
