Lazar Hayward picked the perfect time to start playing like himself again. He salvaged both his game and the Golden Eagles’ chances for a victory with one deep three pointer from the left wing. That shot tied the game at 67 apiece with only 27.5 seconds left in the second half and made up for his 1-10 performance from the field up until that point.
Rashad Bishop’s three point shot fell short for Cincinnati (15-11, 6-8 Big East) to end regulation and Hayward went right back to work. He started OT with a short jumper in the lane to put Marquette (17-9, 8-6 Big East) up two, and then his three pointer with 2:13 left put Marquette ahead for good at 73-70.
Bishop, who led the Bearcats with 17 points on 7-12 shooting, cut the lead to one on a three of his own with 7.9 seconds remaining. They immediately fouled Maurice Acker who calmly stepped up and made both free throws to cap an impressive 16-17 performance for the Golden Eagles from the line. Deonta Vaughn missed a deep three as time expired to seal the win, 79-76.
The first half was all about runs. Marquette led by as much as 13 on the heels of a 17-0 run, but Cincinnati came right back. The Bearcats 21-2 run over the final 7:46 of the half countered any good will the Golden Eagles had worked for. They looked lost of both the offensive and defensive ends of the floor and at one point went over four minutes without even scoring a point. Add it all up and Marquette was lucky only trail 39-33 at the half.
Lazar Hayward ended the game with 13 points and 11 rebounds for his sixth double-double in Big East play. Darius Johnson-Odom and Jimmy Butler each had 20 points to lead Marquette, but the surprising story was the play of Junior Joe Fulce. The seldom used forward contributed a career high 13 points and five rebounds in 15 minutes on 6-8 shooting that was a nice mix of jumpers and layups. He even hit his second three pointer of the season in the first half. If Marquette can get that kind of production from Fulce on a consistent basis it will add needed depth and height to a short rotation in both senses of the word.
This was an important road win to keep Marquette on the good side of the bubble heading into the postseason. Joe Lunardi had the Golden Eagles as one of the last four teams to make the tournament even after the Pittsburgh loss and a road win over a fellow bubble team in Cincinnati only enhances Marquette’s profile. They stay on the road for their next game at St. Johns (15-11, 5-9 Big East), Wednesday at 6:30.
