Cubs Ruin Billy's Big Night By Calling Up Jeff Samardzija

Last night, the Chicago Cubs honored me by giving my favorite Cub of all-time his own statue:

Billy Williams was surrounded by family, friends and longtime former teammates as a statue of the likeness of the Cubs Hall of Famer was unveiled during a ceremony Tuesday at the corner of Addison and Sheffield, just outside of Wrigley Field.
Former teammates Ernie Banks, Ferguson Jenkins, Glenn Beckert, Randy Hundley and Ron Santo were in attendance as Williams' wife, Shirley, four daughters and grandchildren watched the long-awaited depiction of Sweet-Swinging Billy Williams from Whistler, Alabama.

BSquared Show

Tuesday on B-Squared, the guys welcome a format change to the program.  Boise State with a statement win last night in Landover.  If they win out, should they get a crack at the National Championship? Also, we dissect the season openers of Northwestern, Illinois and Notre Dame.  Is there reason for optimism for each of the three fan bases?  The Bears host the Lions in just five days.  Are they being pelted with too much criticism after a less-than-impressive pre-season?  Mike Quade benched Starlin Castro after his latest mental gaffe.  Stern move, but would he have done it to well-paid veteran such as Aramis Ramirez or Alfonso Soriano?  The White Sox had a great weekend, but so did the Twins.  We talk all these topics and more.

Cubs Manage a Come-From-Behind Win. No, I'm Not Kidding

Marmol and Soto (Photo Courtesy of Chicago Tribune)

I think we've finally figured out the key to a winning season for the Cubs: no one can watch.
The less people watching a game, the better they seem to play. Take yesterday for example. Many of us didn't even know there WAS a game, and the Cubs manage a rare come-from-behind win to steal one from the Astros:
Geovany Soto's solo home run in the eighth off reliever Wilton Lopez gave the Cubs a 5-4 win, with Carlos Marmol saving the game for Andrew Cashner.
After allowing four runs in the second, Coleman wound up not allowing another run in a six-inning stint.
Coleman got off to a bad start before settling down, giving up four runs on four hits and two walks in the second inning. The Cubs answered back with three in the third, including a two-run homer by Marlon Byrd, and tied it in the fifth on Jeff Baker's RBI double.
The Astros came in 8-4 against the Cubs, and had a respectable 47-38 record since June 1, after starting out the season 17-34.
I know it's hard to believe this team is 9 games over .500 since June 1, but apparently that's the case.
Don't look now, kids, but someone is on the comback trail:
OKLAHOMA CITY -- Mark Prior struck out two batters in a scoreless inning Sunday in his debut for the Triple-A Oklahoma City RedHawks.

Prior stranded the bases loaded after allowing a pair of singles and walking a batter in the fourth inning of Oklahoma City's 9-1 loss to the Omaha Royals. It was the first game for the former first-round draft pick and All-Star pitcher after signing a minor league deal with the Texas Rangers.
Prior is trying to make a comeback after two shoulder injuries forced him to miss the 2007 and 2008 seasons. The right-hander went 42-29 in five years with the Chicago Cubs and was an All-Star in 2003.

He started his comeback in the independent Golden Baseball League last month before being acquired by the Rangers.

Cubs Labor Day Headlines

Ryan Dempster (Tribune Photo by Scott Strazzante)

I'm not sure what to say about yesterday's game, so I'll just turn it over to Mike Quade.

"Tough day," said manager Mike Quade. "Win a series and feel lousy. Demps had a tough day, obviously. Still, he's an out way from keeping us in the thing. One of those days, and then it got away from us and got sloppy after that. - The mistakes of youth showing up again. I've said before, it's not a straight line. There are going to be relapses. There's going to be trouble. The kids have done a good job, but you're going to have days like this."

Quade went on to finish:

"There'd be days like this my mama said."

Cubs Headlines: Goodbye, Bagels. It's Been Nice

Assorted Bagels

Stupid Cubs. You spend the whole summer losing, and then when there's finallly something in it for me, you decide to start playing baseball.

As the result of the Mets appearing to b e worse than the Cubs (at least for one series), my Throwing Like a Girl podcast partner and Metsgrrl blogger, Caryn Rose, has won herself a Due's pizza.
As for me? I get a big fat pile of nothing.
Thanks a lot, stupid winning Cubs:
Manager Mike Quade improved to 8-3 since taking over for Lou Piniella, which is the best start since the ill-fated regime of Jim Essian in 1991.

And the new, improved
Carlos Zambrano improved to 4-0 with a 1.98 earned-run average in six starts since undergoing anger management counseling.
So you know how Carlos is supposed to be writing down his feelings in a journal when he gets angry? I am willing to pay HANDSOMELY for a copy of said anger-journal.
Just sayin'.
Today is Blackhawks Day (or something) at Wrigley. The only reason I care about this is because my future ex-husband, Duncan Keith, is singing the stretch, and I want to see if he's manage to scrare himself up any teeth yet.
What?
Well, I couldn't take him out anywhere the way he was!

Chicago Fire Battle LA Galaxy to 1-1 Draw

Collin John
CHICAGO, IL (Sept. 4, 2010) – Collins John lashed home a 88th minute free kick to give the 10-man Fire a lead, but Omar Gonzalez headed home the equalizer three minutes later as the Fire and Galaxy battled to a 1-1 draw in front of 21,068 fans at TOYOTA PARK.

The Fire (6-7-7, 25 points) earned their seventh draw of the season and fourth at TOYOTA PARK. With 25 points and ten matches remaining, the Fire sit in fifth place in the Eastern Conference.

The Fire were reduced to 10 men after defender Gonzalo Segares was shown a straight red card in the 21st minute for an apparent elbow to LA Galaxy defender Leonardo. After Leonardo went down in the area and Segares was given his marching orders the referee immediately pointed to the spot, awarding the league-leading Galaxy a penalty. Fire rookie goalkeeper Sean Johnson stood tall as Donovan approached the spot and dove to his left to parry the U.S. National Team star’s low driven effort off of the line and keep the match level at 0-0.

Playing a man down, substitute forward Collins John gave the Fire the lead in the 88th minute. John, who came on for Patrick Nyarko in the 82nd minute, struck a curling free kick around the Galaxy wall and past Galaxy ‘keeper Donovan Ricketts into the back of the net to give the Fire a 1-0 advantage with time winding down.

Brian Kelly Era Begins as Notre Dame Holds Off Purdue

By:  Evan J. Thomas

Electric…  That was the feeling as new head coach Brian Kelly led the 2010 version of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish onto the field Saturday at an unseasonably cooler Notre Dame Stadium.  Kelly stated before the game that the pageantry of college football and seeing his first game at Notre Dame was a little overwhelming.

The first quarter featured a slew of short passes, draws and dump offs by junior Quarterback Dayne Crist in Kelly’s spread offense.  The offense moved the ball in those first ten minutes but with the short plays didn’t get down the field too far.

Late in the first quarter, Irish defensive back Darren Walls snagged an interception off of a misguided pass from the Miami Hurricane transfer and Purdue quarterback Robert Marve.  The interception set off a series of big runs by the Irish offense and sophomore Cierre Wood and included some great downfield blocking by All American Junior wide receiver Michael Floyd.  Seven plays and 84 yards later and senior running back Armando Allen scampered into the end zone for the first touchdown in the Brian Kelly era.  The first quarter ended with Crist having only one incompletion and the Irish leading 7-0 over the Boilermakers.

The second quarter began just as the first one ended as Notre Dame’s offense moved briskly down the field.  One highlight included Crist, who is coming off a season ending knee injury last season galloping down the sideline for his first significant run of the season.  Crist showed no ill effects of the knee injury as he smartly ran out of bounds before taking a hit.  After a few incompletions out of the end zone, the Irish added a short field goal for a 10-0 lead with 11:10 remaining in the half.

The Boilermakers finally showed some life in the remaining minutes of the second quarter as they brought in red shirt freshman Rob Henry and used some trickery to move the ball on the Irish defense.  Purdue did manage to get the ball inside the Notre Dame 10 yard line but the Irish defense held their own and made some great tackles in holding Purdue to a field goal.
